PERINATAL PEER COACH JOB DESCRIPTION

About Our Roots: Our vision at is to build generational mental wellness by and with communities of color impacted by poverty. We do this by virtually connecting pregnant and postpartum communities to peer coaches to promote healing, prevent anxiety and depression. Our 501(c)(3) non-profit is supercharged by philanthropic foundations and individual donors who believe in our mission.

About the Role: Peer coaches are the backbone of Our Roots. You share lived experiences with our communities including parenthood, culture, race, ethnicity, and more, and you will utilize your superpowers to co-create radical shifts in mental wellness for our mamas, birthing parents, and generations to come.

This particular role is to support all of our community members with a focus on our Black and African American identifying birthing parents. You will offer loving, culturally-reverent, and responsive peer support through weekly virtual check-ins with our community members. At the same time, strong organizational skills and detail-orientation are key as you document and uplift the experiences of our communities. This role is in service of ensuring our mamas and birthing parents experience joy during this often challenging and transformative time in their lives, and of ensuring their children thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer weekly, virtual coaching check-ins with our mamas and birthing parents

  • Build a strong relationship and trust with parent

  • Draw from your lived experience, our resource database, and cultural practices to build tools for healing and wellbeing

  • Organize check-in based on content and timing guidelines offered in onboarding and ongoing training

  • Receive feedback, self-reflect and incorporate supervisory feedback on an ongoing basis to improve your coaching practice

  • Capture the quantitative and qualitative experience of our communities through note-taking during each session, and depression and anxiety screenings in a way that’s supportive, not extractive

  • Proactively manage complex needs of your parents by referring them to resources, adding resources to database as needed, and leaning on team when you need support

  • Take active part in 1:1 and team meetings to share and receive direct and nurturing feedback, to share learnings and offer support to other coaches, and develop and apply new skills to improve outcomes for our communities

  • Participate in special projects that support our small, and growing non-profit

About You:

  • You have lived experience around the issues we are trying to eliminate and/or proximity to communities of color impacted by poverty

  • You are experienced in using key coaching skills such as active listening and paraphrasing, and have at least 3 years of experience as a peer coach or in a similar role

  • You deeply understand the pregnancy and postpartum experience

  • You feel comfortable not having all the answers, yet you’re eager to hold space and explore solutions

  • You are energized about building relationships virtually (this role is remote)

  • You have a penchant for learning about and using new tools and technologies

  • You hold deep empathy and are an active listener

  • You are meticulous, organized, and detail oriented making it easy for you to manage and address the complex needs of several mamas and birthing parents at one time

  • You are persistent and have the self-motivation to find solutions where others see challenges

  • You can work 10 - 20 hours a week during weekdays, and with some flexibility on evenings and weekends based on need

  • You are comfortable with some fluctuation in hours based on parent engagement

  • You can perform Our Roots duties without children or others present (this is critical for the privacy and for building safety with our communities)

  • You are comfortable providing and receiving direct and nurturing feedback, and incorporating that feedback on an ongoing basis into your coaching practice

  • You’re committed to working on your own mental wellness including setting boundaries with those you are caring for

Interview Rounds & Timeline:

Round 1 Interviews: Early February

Round 2 Interviews: Mid- February

Onboarding: Early March

This timeline is an approximation, and may be shifted.

What Our Roots Offers:

  • Compensation: $28 - $34 depending on experience

  • Weekly supportive supervision
